Nîmes is located in the south-western French province of Languedoc-Roussillon, and is the capital of the Ministry Gard. The distance to the city of Marseilles is about. 120 km. Nîmes has just under 150,000 inhabitants (2010), and has significant industry – especially in wine, fruit processing and textile. The well-known clothing brand Denim comes from there.
Nîmes has been by since pre-Christian times (Nemausus) – and is famous for its numerous monuments from Roman times. These are of course among the city’s main attractions. This includes the it Corinthian Temple “Maison Carree” from around the year 100 ADKr, the impressive theatre – which is the best preserved Roman building in France, the remains of the old city walls (and gate) – and Aqueduct “Pont du Gard”.
Other attractions that are worth mentioning, is the cathedral “Saint Castor”, which is built over an ancient Temple of Augustus – and the Modern Art Museum “Norman Fosters Carree d’Art”, which was listed in 1986 as the Maison Carree.
The nearest airport is Nimes Airport, located approx. 20 km southeast of downtown.
