Agadir guide
The seaside resort of Agadir is Morocco ‘s Atlantic Coast – approx. 10 km north of the mouth of the river Wadi Sous. The city has just under 700,000 inhabitants (2010). Agadir is first and foremost an important port city and a center of tourism.
The city was founded by the Portuguese around 1500, but most of the old city was completely destroyed by a major earthquake in 1960. It was rebuilt slightly south of the old city – and is today exterior as more east-European than Moroccan.
Among the preserved remains of old Agadir is the great Portuguese fortress during the first half of the 1500s.
Otherwise, the long, inviting sandy beach city’s biggest tourist attraction. Here, the resort hotels in a row.
The “European” lively café atmosphere leaves its mark on the city, but you can also seek out more traditional Moroccan culture – including in the local market Souk Al Had. There you can buy everything from electronics and furniture to clothing, spices and souvenirs. To bargain is – as elsewhere in Morocco – a very important part of the excitement. The prices seller basically demands, is never fixed.
There are also several interesting museums in Agadir and three beautiful parks. And on a hill about 7 miles northwest of downtown, you can visit the ruins of the old “Kasbah” – the former fortified town.
The nearest airport is Agadir Al-Massira International Airport, located 27 miles southeast of downtown.
