Avignon guide
Avignon is located in Southeastern France, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and is main town in the department of Vaucluse.
Avignon has about 95,000 inhabitants (2008), and is situated on the River Rhone – as approx. 80 km to the south flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
The town has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool wet winters.
Avignon is an ancient city and is surrounded by a medieval town walls. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Avignon is perhaps most famous for its historic role as the seat of several popes in the 1300s, and a major tourist attraction in town is the impressive Papal Palace “Palais des Papes” from 1350’s.
Another point of Avignon is the Romanesque cathedral “Notre Dame des Doms” from the 1100s. Near the papal palace on the Rhône lie the ruins of the bridge “Pont Saint Benezet” – better known as “Pont d’Avignon”. The bridge is from 1185, and is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bridge originally had a length of 900 meters, but because of the damage stops the bridge now in the middle of the river.
The city also has several interesting museums – including “Musée du Petit Palais” – which has great art exhibitions.
The nearest airport is Aéroport d’Avignon – Caumont, located 8 km southeast of the city.
