The port city of Bristol is located on England’s south coast (near the border with Wales), and has approximately 430,000 inhabitants (2009). The city is located specifically at the river Avon – like 12 miles to the north flows into the Bristol Channel.
Bristol is UK 8 largest city (by population) and an important educational center with two universities. The city is also an important cultural center for the region and is known to be an industrial town – with the production of such aircraft and glass.
Bristol has a number of historic tourist attractions – including the old town with its narrow streets, the ancient theatre “Old Vic” in 1766, the beautiful Bristol Cathedral from 1142 and the church of St. Mary Redcliffe from the 1300s.North of old town “Broadmead” – which is the city’s shopping district. This is also the big shopping center “The Mall Galleries.”
Other popular attractions include Bristol the 414 meter long bridge “Clifton Suspension Bridge” from 1864, science center “Explore @ Bristol” – with its interactive exhibits and planetarium. The city also has a zoological and botanical garden.
Bristol International Airport is located 14 miles southwest of downtown.
