Chur is located in the east of Switzerland, and is the capital of the Swiss canton of Graubünden.The city is located at about 600 meters altitude Alpenrhein valley, near the river Rhine. Chur has about 33,000 inhabitants (2010), most of which are German-speaking. The minority speak Romansh.
Chur is Switzerland’s oldest city, and was a period around the birth of Christ Roman provincial capital, and thus has a long history to show. Because of its strategic location at the entrance to the four mountain passes, had Chur for centuries an important position as “sentinel” over mountain passes to Italy.In recent times, this geographic location had great significance for the development of Chur as a tourist.
Chur has a very beautiful Altstadt (“Old Town”) to show off, including with a number of well-preserved houses. Otherwise there are several magnificent churches that dominate the cityscape – primarily the impressive Cathedral St. Maria Himmelfahrt from the 1100s (with a rare collection of art treasures). But the churches St. Lucius and St. Martin can be well worth mentioning.
Among the many other attractions in Chur, we find the Bishop’s Palace and the Government Palace, both from the 1700s.
Several of the city’s museums are also popular tourist attractions – for example Bündner Kunstmuseum, Bündner Nature Museum and Ratisches Museum. The latter is a private cultural institution Romansh history and culture.
The nearest airport is Samedan Airport at St. Moritz, located about 45 miles southeast of Chur.
