Dundee is Scotland’s 4. largest city has 142,000 inhabitants (2010).The city is situated on the east coast by the Bay “Firth of Tay”, which is part of the North Sea.
The city’s highest point is “Dundee Law” – a former volcano – located 174 m
Dundee was granted city status in 1889, and has been known as the “City of Discovery” – because of several scientific activities that have taken place here. The ship RRS Discovery – which was used for polar expeditions in the period 1901 – 1904 were built here.
Dundee is a major port and industrial city and a regional center for employment, education and commerce. It has a university, founded in 1881.
Some of the most popular tourist attractions include St. Mary’s Tower – originally from the 1500s, the City Hall from 1734, the Art Gallery “Eduardo Alessandro Studios” and “McManus Galleries” – located in a building from the 1800’s – and has a great collection of arts and artifacts of city history. There is also an archaeological department and a natural history department.
Dundee also has a beautiful botanical garden, and city park “Camp Down Park” – where you can also visit a mini-zoo.
