Glasgow is located in southern central Scotland on both sides of the River Clyde, and is the country’s most populous city. The city has 593,000 inhabitants (2010), while the metropolitan area has a population of 1.4 million. Glasgow is with this UK 3 largest city.

Glasgow is the administrative center of Lanarkshire and Scotland’s most important industrial and commercial center. The city has a large harbor with shipyards and growing service industry – the banking, insurance and tourism. Glasgow is also an important educational and cultural center, and the university was founded in 1451.

Glasgow has a number of historic buildings – most from the 1800s – but St. Mungo’s Cathedral is from the 1200s and a major tourist attraction.

Buchanan Street in the city center is one of the main streets of Glasgow, and the main shopping street. The street is popular with street performers, and there are the countless popular shops, malls and department stores.

Other tourist attractions in Glasgow include CCA – Centre for Contemporary Art, Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery – the art exhibition and sculpture garden, Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum – one of Europe’s finest art collections (the period from the 1400s to the 1900s).

The city has otherwise a number of parks and recreation areas – including Queens Park with football Hamden Park, Kelvingrove Park and a botanical garden.

Glasgow International Airport is located 11 miles west of downtown, is the country’s second busiest.

The city also has another airport – Glasgow Prestwick Airport – where the air is composed primarily of low cost airlines. This airport is located 36 miles southwest of Glasgow.
