Gozo (which means “joy”) is an island belonging to the Republic of Malta. It is 14 km long and 7 km wide and has a population of about 31,000 (2010). The capital is Victoria, and in addition to it there are 16 small villages on the island. Gozo is located northwest of the main island of Malta.
People have lived on Gozo since since about 5000 BCKr., And the island has many historic attractions to show off – including the special Ggantija Temples, considered among the world’s oldest religious building remains. Another important archaeological site is the Xaghra Stone Circle. Otherwise, there are some 22 churches on the island. The most striking is the large Xewkija church with room for 3,000 people. The church has a dome which is larger than that found in St. Paul’s Cathedral London !
Gozo is also known for its colorful carnival parties. Especially popular is the annual carnival in the village of Nadur. Parties are at all an important tradition at Goze – and in summer there are concerts and fireworks every weekend different places on the island.
A number of Maltese dishes or variants of these dishes are associated with Gozo.
Nearest Airport is Malta International Airport outside the capital Valletta. From Gozo one can use either passenger ferry or seaplane from Mgarr Harbour in the south of the island, to get to the Malta.
