Gzira (or il-Sliema) is a small town located on the northeast coast of the island of Malta – approx. 6 km north of the capital Valletta.The city is particularly famous for its fashionable yacht marina. Gzira has
approximately 8,400 inhabitants (2011). Word Gzira means “island” in Maltese, and the town is named after Manoel Island which lies just outside the city – in the bay between Sliema and Valletta.
Gzira is no old town. The construction start first in the 1800s and in the first instance as a city of workers. Today it is tourism that dominates the city.
Sights Gzira’s beautiful seafront. From there you can see across to the old city walls of Valletta, which are illuminated at night. The promenade is also beautiful parkland, and here – and at the yacht marina – we also find the city’s shopping district.
Otherwise, the beautiful church in the city mentioned – known to locals as “tal-Gebla”, and – not least – two interesting museums: the National Museum of Archaeology and the History Museum “Great Seige of Malta and the Knights of St. John.”
A trip over to Manoel Island is also recommended. Where can such visit Fort Manoel, built in the 1700s by “The Knights of Malta”.
Nearest Airport is Malta International Airport, which is approx. 11 km south of Gzira.
