The city of Medinah (Medina) has 1.3 million inhabitants, and is located west of Saudi Arabia – about 180 miles east of the Red Sea.
Medinah means “by the prophet,” and is Islam’s second holiest city after Mecca. Prophet Muhammad was buried here, and the city has great pilgrim traffic.
The city has a number of religious monuments, only Muslims are allowed to. Previously, the city only for Muslims, but some areas are beginning to be open to all.
Right in the center is “Prophet’s Mosque” – “Al-Masjid an-Nabawi” from the year 622 AD Kr. The building was originally Prophet Muhammad’s house, but was later rebuilt and expanded into a mosque. The mosque has a green dome, where the Prophet is buried. “Prophet’s Mosque” has space for 600,000 people.
Quba Mosque from the 600s BC Kr. is also an attraction in Medinah. This was according to Islamic tradition, the first mosque that was ever built.
Medinah has many public parks – including “Garden King Fahd Central Park” and a variety of entertainment and amusement parks.
The nearest airport is Prince Mohammad Bin Abdul Aziz International Airport, located 15 km northeast of Medinah city center.
