Mellieha (or il-Mellieha) is a small coastal town in the northwestern part of the island of Malta.The population is around 7200 (2008). Mellieha is a popular tourist destination during the summer months.
Mellieha’s history dates back to ancient times, when some farmers and fishermen dwelt in some natural caves here. During the Middle Ages saw the emergence of a small village, but this was in the 1600s abandoned because of fear of pirate gangs that roamed the area.
First, during the British colonization in the 1800s developed a distinct town-style main Mellieha.
People were then encouraged by the British government to settle there and signed leases with reasonable people.
One of the most popular visitor destination in the city is the magnificent beach of Mellieha Bay, which is the longest in Malta. Here the tourist hotels in a row.
Fort St. Agatha’s Tower (“The Red Tower”), built in 1649, is the main historical attraction in Mellieha. The tower consists example by a series of stairs and a large central door, which in earlier times was defended by a drawbridge. There has also been a spiral staircase in the tower, which led up to the roof where the guns were located. This was taken during the restoration of the tower.
Each year on 8 September marks Mellieha that the Virgin Mary is the patron saint. The town’s church, with its cloister, is devoted to her.
Mellieha was awarded “EDEN – European Destinations of Excellence” in 2009.
