Newark is located in the state of New Jersey, just 15 miles west of New York – Is often regarded as part of the New York metropolitan area. The population is in excess of 280,000 (2010).

Newark’s business are part industry based, but it has gradually become a major trading and communications center. Moreover, the city has an important deepwater port.

Newark was originally founded in 1666 but had its greatest period of growth in the 1800s and early 1900s. In the latter part of the 1900s, the city was dominated by racial conflict, but this has become less of a problem over the last couple of decades – along with an extensive urban renewal.

There are several historical buildings in the city, including “Cathedral of the Sacred Heart” –   North America’s 5th ‘s Cathedral. It was erected between 1899 and 1954 after the much older French models, and is currently the archdiocese of the Catholic Church. Also the Jewish “Prince Street Synagogue” is well worth a visit. Otherwise, the city has several 1930s buildings in the “art deco” style to show off.

A visit to the cathedral, is a short trip to the beautiful Branch Brook Park, which contains the nation’s largest collection of flowering cherry trees – called “Cherryblossomland”.

Newark is also known for its rich cultural life, and “The New Jersey Performing Arts Center” (NJPAC) is one of the largest centers for the performing arts in the USA. It was opened in 1997 and has contributed greatly to the revitalization of the city.

The nearest airport is Newark Liberty International Airport, which is located 8 miles south of downtown.
