Plymouth guide
The port city of Plymouth is located in southwest England, and belongs to the county of Devon. Plymouth is the largest English city which lies south of London, and has approximately 257,000 inhabitants (2010).
The city is geographically located where the rivers Plym and Tamar flows into the 5 km long bay “Plymouth Sound” – by the English Channel.
The harbour is the fortress “Royal Citadel” from 1666, and visitors can get guided tours in the summer.
Otherwise, the city is perhaps best known for his popular aquarium “National Marine Aquarium,” which is the UK’s largest, with 400 species. The aquarium is located in a modern building and it has both a café and shop. The main pool has a depth of 10 meters, and here one can observe a variety of species of fish and sharks up close.
Other tourist attractions include Plymouth Church “St. Andrews Church” from the 1400s, the Catholic cathedral in 1858, the lighthouse “Smeaton’s Tower” from 1759 and the museum “Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery” – with the natural and cultural history and art gallery.
The city has otherwise a number of theaters and concert venues, and several great parks.
The nearest airport is Plymouth City Airport, which is located 6.5 miles north of downtown. From here, it is primarily domestic flights to destinations – including London Gatwick Airport.
The International airport Exeter International Airport is located 76 km northeast of Plymouth.
