Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas – and with a population of about 2.2 million (2010), it is also the 4th largest in the USA. Houston is otherwise the center of a larger metropolitan area (Houston-Galveston) with nearly 5.7 million residents.At the turn of the century there were only just under 50,000 people in Houston, so it was in the 1900s one of America’s fastest growing cities.

The city was founded in 1836 and was in the periods 1837-39 and 1842-46 capital of the then independent Republic of Texas. Later developed Houston to become one of America’s most important railway hubs. The city is not a typical city, but are relatively “grown up” – that is, it is spread over a large area, and most closely resembles a more or less random amalgamation of suburbs and business areas.

Since the 1960s, Houston’s often been referred to as “Space City” because NASA chose to put its control center for manned space missions here. It is located about 35 miles southeast of downtown, and bears the official name of “Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.”

Houston is otherwise an important utdanningsby – with a thirty universities and colleges. The largest is the University of Houston with nearly 40,000 students.

The city has also invested heavily on culture and Alley Theatre is considered to be one of America’s best scenes. Among the other cultural attractions must especially the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts named. Houston also has one of America’s most famous symphony orchestras – and also the world’s largest indoor sports facility (the Astrodome).

The nearest airport is Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, located 37 km north of the city. It is also one of America’s busiest.
