Zimbabwe is a landlocked country like South Africa which borders South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia in the northwest and Mozambique to the east.The capital is Harare and the country has a population of 12,619,600 (2012) inhabitants.Zimbabwe has three official languages: English, Shona and Sindebele.
Because of the unrest in the country is Zimbabwe tourism has gone down. The country’s president Robert Mugabe has been in power since 1980 and changed the constitution. While he was formerly a celebrated liberator Mugabe has become one of the most tyrannical and corrupt dictator who has destroyed the former relatively prosperous Zimbabwe and made it one of the world’s poorest countries with the world’s lowest life expectancy. In recent years we have had major problems with inflation. Until 2007, the fourth of the inhabitants have left the country because of the political situation.
The most popular tourist destination is Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia northwest of the country. This is also the Victoria Falls National Park is one of eight national parks in Zimbabwe. Biggest of them is Hwange National Park, it is a few hours drive from the Victoria Falls and is known for its incredible wildlife as it is located on the Zambezi River. Here you can encounter herds of African elephants and zebras, giraffes mm. Would also predators like lions and African wild dog, found here.
The ruins in the “Great Zimbabwe” (Great Zimbabwe) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the stone ruins of an ancient city that was the center of a great empire, known as Munhumutapaimperiet (ca. 1250-1629). This empire ruled over an area of about the same size as today’s Zimbabwe
The Eastern Highlands are a mountainous area near the border with Mozambique. The highest peak in Zimbabwe, Mount Nyangani at 2593 m is located here, as well Bvumba mountains and the Nyanga National Park.
