Ostend is a city in West Flanders in Belgium.With 69 732 (2011) inhabitants, it is the largest coastal city in Belgium.
Ostend is a cosmopolitan port city, and much of what happens in Ostend is concentrated activities in the harbour. The city is protected from the North Sea by a network of dikes.
Because of its strategic location on the North Sea, the city has repeatedly been invaded, burnt and plundered by various armies throughout history. It was also hard hit during the 2 World War. In the 1800s, joined the Belgian royal family to holiday in Ostend Ostend developed thus a popular holiday destination. It also highlighted the city’s status.
It has a kilometers-long beach, summer travel many day trips by train to the city to enjoy the beach that is close to the station. In Ostend you can visit the maritime discovery center Earth Explorer. Another major attraction is the sailing ship Mercator made into a museum and has an interesting history.
The airport Ostend-Bruges International Airport is located just outside the city center.
