Sunderland is a coastal town in northwest England – In the county of Tyne and Wear.The town is located 15 km southeast of Newcastle and has approx.185,000 inhabitants (2010). Former Sunderland was known as an important harbour city and for its considerable coal exports. The original city of Sunderland, who represents the downtown core, was expanded in 1974 under the name City of Sunderland, who together have around 280,000 inhabitants. City of Sunderland also includes the former towns of Washington, Houton-le-Spring and Hetton-le-Hole.
In the district of Monkwearmouth, near the mouth of the River Wear, is the great St. Peter’s Church. The oldest parts are from the late 600s, the youngest of the 1300s. This is also Sunderland University. There are also several interesting museums in the city – including Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Sunderland Glass Centre. A popular tourist destination is also the Medieval Castle Hylton Castle.
