Kittila is a municipality located in the province of Lapland in northern Finland. The municipality has a population of 6315 (2012) inhabitants.
Kittila is a popular place for tourists, and home to the famous ski resort of Levi. Levi Alpine skiing World Cup held here and there is not the least because of the World Cup that Levi now stands on the international skimap. The first skikurset was held in 1906, so it has a long history as a winter destination. The area also has excellent conditions for skiing. Other popular activities include dog sled ride or a trip to the sauna on cold winter days. Kittila is known to be the place for the lowest recorded temperature ever in Finland : -51.5 ° C, measured in January 1999.
In summer the area is ideal for walks in the woods and mountain. In Kittila is part of the Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park.
5. June 2006 it was announced that the Canadian company Agnico-Eagle would start a gold mine in Kittila. It is Europe’s largest gold mine in operation, and every day it collected gold for five million. The mine has created hundreds of jobs to the area.
