Keflavík is a small town on the Icelandic Reykjanes Peninsula, ca. 35 km southwest of the capital Reykjavik. The town has approximately 8,000 inhabitants (2010), and is most famous for the large international airport on the outskirts of the city.
Keflavik was founded as a fishing port in the 1500s, and is still fishing and fish processing is important for the industry. Otherwise it since 2 World War II was a major NATO base – with a significant U.S. presence – here, but it has during recent years lost much of its importance.
The main attraction in Keflavik is Duus House, a cultural center that is an integral part of the city’s largest department store. There is an art museum with changing exhibitions and a concert – in addition to a very interesting collection of various ship models.
