Moscow is the capital of Russia, and Europe’s largest city with 11.6 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area (2012).Moscow is situated roughly in the European part of Russia at the Moscow River.
The city is Russia’s leading industrial, financial and commercial city and the country’s main transport hub. In addition, Moscow is the country’s scientific and cultural center and has over 80 colleges and universities – including Moscow University from 1755.
The city has many museums and art collections. Best known is the Tretyakov Gallery with a large collection of Russian art from different time periods, Pushkin Museum – with exhibits of classical and modern art, as well as Moscow’s Historical Museum.
Moscow is world famous for its architecture, and the city’s historic center, we find “Moscow Kremlin” with walls and a fortress from the 1400s with 19 towers. Inside the walls are such Tsars coronation cathedral “Uspenski” from 1479, Blagovesjtsjens Cathedral from 1489 and a number of other churches, cathedrals and palaces.
East of the Kremlin “Krasnaya Ploschad” or “Red Square” – an old square in the Soviet period was used to great political gatherings and military parades.Here you will also find Leni Mausoleum – one of the city’s most visited attractions and St. Basil’s Cathedral from 1550’s – which is Russia’s most famous church with its nine colorful domed towers.
Other popular tourist attractions in Moscow include concert hall “Tsjajkovskijhallen”, Bolshoi Theatre, Malyjteatret, state circus and the puppet.
4 km west of the Kremlin in Moscow is “Moscow City” – with homes, offices, shops and amusement park.
Moscow has five airports – which 2 of them are international. The main airport (and nation’s) is Moscow Domodedovo International Airport, located 42 km southeast of downtown.
