St. Petersburg is Russia’s second largest city. It is on the west of the country, where the river Neva drains into the Gulf, and has 4,880,000 inhabitants (2010). St. Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, and was the capital of Russia in the period 1712-1918.In the years 1914-1924, the city was known as Petrograd – Leningrad and 1924-1991.
St. Petersburg is one of Russia’s most important ports. In addition to the location of the Gulf of Finland, it is also linked to the White Sea via Lake Ladoga and Kvitsjøkanalen – and Moscow through Volga-Baltic Canal.
St. Petersburg has a number of fashionable sights to offer. Most famous is the huge complex Hermitage, such as include the famous Winter Palace from the 1750s. Here we find one of the largest and oldest art museums – where such can see works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso.

The nearest airport is Pulkovo International Airport, located 22 km south of St. Petersburg.
