Kruger National Park is well over 100 years old National Park in the northeastern part of South Africa.It was established in 1898 with the purpose of preserving and protecting wildlife in the vast plain area in this part of the country.
The national park is one of the largest and most famous – with a total area of nearly 20,000 km2. In addition to lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo, there are over 140 mammal species here as well as over 500 bird species. There are also a large number of reptiles, amphibians and fish in the park – which includes more than 330 different species.
The park also contains a number of archaeological goodies – such as cave paintings and other traces of early human activity.
Kruger National Park extends to the border with Mozambique, and a few years ago, it opened a large, adjoining parkland in the neighboring country – Parque Nacional do Limpopo.
The nearest town is the provincial capital of Nelspruit, which has approx. 225,000 inhabitants (2010). It is located about 60 miles south of Kruger National Park, and in 2009 changed its name to Mbombela.
The nearest airport is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which is located on the outskirts of Nelspruit / Mbombela.
