Detroit is located on the River Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, and is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Detroit is located directly opposite the town of Windsor in the Province of Ontario (the Canada ).
The Detroit has 714,000 inhabitants (2010), while the metropolitan area has a population of approx. 4.3 million. Detroit is a major port city on the Detroit River.
The U.S. auto industry started in Detroit, and the city still has a significant automotive – where General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have their factories.
Detroit also has university – which was founded in 1911. Detroit is known as a multicultural city with a large immigrant. Cityscape consists mostly of high-rise buildings and skyscrapers, and Comerica Tower of Detroit Center towers 189 feet above the ground.
The city has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Winter rainfall often comes in the form of snow.
Some of the most important tourist attractions include “Detroit Cultural Center” – in libraries, art galleries and museums – including a history museum, Science Center and “Detroit Institute of Arts” – which has a significant art collection. Detroit has otherwise opera houses, theaters, several casinos, zoo and aquarium. In the suburb of Dearborn is the popular “Henry Ford Museum” – which has a large car collection and exhibition of transport equipment.
The city is also known for its annual international jazz festival, which is popular with both locals and tourists.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is located 22 miles southwest of downtown.
