The Algarve is the southernmost region in Portugal, covering a total area of nearly 5,000 km2.It is roughly equivalent to the district which is also called Faro.Around 417,000 people are resident in (2010), but during the tourist season multiplied this figure. Around 5 million tourists find their way here each year. The capital of the Algarve is Faro. Other notable cities are Albufeira, Lagos, Lagoa, Tavira, Portimão and Praia de Rocha.
The region has traditionally been based on agriculture, and among the products that are grown here are olives, figs, grapes, oranges and pomegranates.Today it is tourism that provides the area’s revenue.
It primarily attracts tourists here is the Mediterranean climate, the clean and inviting beaches and the pleasant sea temperature. Algarve coast has a total length of 155 km.
Otherwise, the region has invested heavily in a range of activities for tourists of all ages. It’s such a variety of courses here. The largest is Rome Golf Resort in Vilamoura.Many of the offerings are also geared towards families with children, and in all there are a dozen different theme parks Algarve.Among the most popular is the Algarve Zoo (an animal and leisure park in Albufeira), Zoo Marine (sjødyrepark, also at Albufeira), Aqualand Algarve (Waterworld Alcantarilha), Aqua Show (bathing and amusement park in Quarteira) and Slide & Splash (swim – and amusement park in Lagoa).
Algarve has its own international airport – Faro Airport.
