Avila (Avila de los Caballeros) is located in central Spain, and is the capital of the province of the same name.The city belongs to the region of Castilla y Leon, and has 59,000 inhabitants (2011).
Avila is located on the River Adaja – about 100 miles northwest of Madrid.The city is an important commercial center for the region, and has two universities. The city is situated 1131 meters above sea level – and is the highest provincial capital in Spain.
Avila is a former royal city and this is reflected in its many palaces and buildings in the Renaissance style, including Valserrabanospalasset from the 1400s (now hotel) and the Casa de los Deanes from the 1500s (former rectory, which today houses a provincial museum).
Avila is famous for its 2.5 km long Roman medieval town walls, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walls are built of brown granite, and was founded in 1090. The wall has 80 towers and 9 gates which are still intact.
The Avila Gothic Cathedral (built between 1100 – and 1300’s) is also a tourist attraction here. The cathedral looks like a fortress, and is part of the wall.
Other important tourist attractions in Avila include the Romanesque churches of San Vicente, San Pedro and San Segundo – all from the 1100’s and the Cathedral Museum – with exhibitions of religious art.
The city has otherwise swimming pool, tennis courts and golf courses.
The nearest major international airport is Madrid Barajas Airport, located 130 km west of Avila.
