This port city is located northeast of the Black Sea, and is the administrative center of the province “Varna Oblast”.Varna has approximately 330,000 inhabitants (2011), and is the 3rd largest city – after Sofia and Plovdiv.
The city has a rich cultural life with theatre, opera, art galleries and museums, and a number of historic buildings. Varna is known for its many annual festivals – including a theatre and several music festivals.
Passengers traveling to Varna, you have access to a variety of beautiful beaches, and its economy is largely based on tourism, especially charter tourists to the sun and beach holiday. From the port there are also ferries to such as Istanbul in Turkey and oddessa in Ukraine.
A major tourist attraction in Varna is the Orthodox Cathedral “Holy Assumption” from the 1880s, which is one of the largest in the country. This is a monumental building with interiors that have beautiful wall paintings and impressive woodcarvings.
Even a tourist magnet in Varna is the park “Seaside Park” which is located at the city beach. In the park you can visit the Maritime Museum, a natural history museum, aquarium, planetarium and a zoo. It is also possible to see the dolphin show at the park.
Varna International Airport is located 8 miles northwest of downtown.
