Cartago is located in Costa Rica, specifically in the Cartago province, and has 148,000 inhabitants (2011).City area, however, has a population of about 433,000. The city is situated 1435 meters above sea level at the Cartago River. Cartago is located at the foot of the 3430 meter high volcano Irazu.
The city was the capital during the period from 1521 to 1823. Costa Rica’s current capital, San José, located 70 miles west of Cartago.
Church “Basilica de los Ángeles” from 1912 is the city’s most famous tourist attraction. The church contains the statue “Black Madonna”, “La Negrita” from the 1600s. The church attracts pilgrims from all over Central America. Many sick also participate in the pilgrimage every year, when the statue is said to have healing powers.
Another point of Cartago is the ruins of the church “Parroquia de Santiago Apostle” from 1662. The church is situated in the center of town and has been destroyed by earthquakes several times.

12 km east of Cartago is the small village of Orosi. Here you will find a beautiful landscape surrounded by mountains and coffee plantations. In addition, you can visit one of Costa Rica ‘s oldest churches.
In Paraiso – 7 km east of Cartago – is a beautiful botanical garden, which is a very popular tourist attraction. It has Central America’s largest collection of orchids.
