Deventer in the east of the Netherlands, and has approx.99,000 inhabitants (2011). The city is located on the east side of the river IJssel in the province of Overijssel.
Deventer is perhaps best known for its production of honey cakes, which have taken place in this city for over 500 years.
Otherwise, the city has a bustling river port and a beautiful historic city with a lot of old buildings. The old town also has a large square with a fountain from 1898.
One of the city’s most famous sights are the church “Grote Kerk” or “Lebuinus Church” which was first built in the 1000’s. The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The present church is from 1528.
Other tourist attractions include Deventer Hall from the 1200s, the late-Gothic building “Waag” from 1528, the Toy Museum – where both are exhibits of historic toys and activities for children and the art gallery “Kunstlab” – with exhibitions of contemporary art.
In the city history museum in Deventer is in the building “Waag” in the square, where visitors can see exhibits of archaeological finds, paintings, silverware and a model of the city.
It is also great shopping in Deventer with small shops and large shopping centers.
The city also arranges a number of annual festivals, where Book Festival and outdoor festival is among the most popular.
