Innsbruck is located east of Austria by the Inn River, is the capital and largest city in the state of Tyrol. The city has about 120,000 inhabitants (2011).

Innsbruck is 575 meters – and is surrounded by high mountains – where several peaks towering 2300 m The town is famous for being a popular winter resort, and the Winter Olympics were held here in 1964 and in 1976.

Innsbruck is an important trade center and transport hub for the region. The city is also Tyrolean cultural center and has several museums and theaters. In addition, Innsbruck known to be one of Austria ‘s main convention and tourist cities.

Old town (“Altstadt”) is a major tourist attraction, and here one can see a number of historic buildings – including Furstenburg from the 1400s with “The Golden Roof.”

Other attractions include Innsbruck Cathedral from 1722, Hofburg Palace from 1400 – and 1500-century church “Hofkirche” from 1565 and the museum “Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum” – whose archaic, scientific and art historical collections.

There are many resorts in the area surrounding the city and the cable car to the mountain Hafelekar – which measures 2334 meters

The city has otherwise a botanical garden and zoo “Alpenzoo”.

Slightly off center lies the castle of Ambras from the 1300s – which attracts many tourists. The castle is open to the public, and here’s an historical museum, a portrait gallery and exhibits of weapons and armor. The castle also has a beautiful park.

Innsbruck Airport is located 5 miles west of downtown.
