The Greek resort island of Kos is located in the Aegean Sea, and is part of the Dodecanese. Kos has about 31,000 inhabitants (2010), but in summer the population is increasing significantly due to the many tourists who come to town.
Kos is located off the southwest coast of Turkey, and is an elongated island with rocky terrain and cliffs along the coast. The highest point is Dikeois, which is 845 m
Kos was famous for its medical school in antiquity, where Hippocrates – “medical arts father” worked.
The main town on the island – Kos Town – located on the northeast coast, and has about 18,000 inhabitants. This is the island’s cultural center. A famous landmark in Kos Town is Johan Brads Ridderborgen from the 1300s. The architecture bears otherwise touch of Roman villas, Venetian buildings and Turkish mosques – located between modern houses and tourist hotels.
Kos is often called the “Island of Contrasts” because you’ll find everything from quiet sandy beaches to a vibrant nightlife here.
The island’s international airport – Kos Airport – “Hippocrates” – is located 26 km west of Kos Town.
