Madrid is the capital of Spain and is located centrally in the country.The city has 3.3 million inhabitants (2011), and is located at the Rio Manzanares – on a plateau approx. 667 mMadrid belongs to the region with the same name as the town.
The capital is the country’s administrative and financial center, and also a significant commercial and cultural center. Madrid is also an important industrial center and a railroad hub. The city’s rich cultural life attracts many tourists and is home to numerous museums, art galleries and theaters.
The famous football club Real Madrid play their home matches at the football stadium “Bernabeu” – which can accommodate up to 110,000 spectators.
Some of Madrid’s most famous tourist attractions include Old town with the royal palace “Palacio Real” from 1764, the cathedral “Nuestra Senora de la Almudena” from 1883, the Art Museum “Museo del Prado” (“Prado Museum”), the Art Gallery “Centro de Arte de Reina Sofia” – with works by eg Picasso and Miró and the attractive avenue “Paseo de la Castellana” – where several government buildings, an archaeological museum and the National Library are located.
It is also great shopping in Madrid – especially in the street “Gran Via”. The capital also has a vibrant nightlife, with restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs.
Madrid is a city with many great parks, one of the most beautiful, largest and oldest Retiro Park, located just off the promenade district Paseo del Prado. It was built back in the 1630s, and includes a number of sculptures and fountains – and several interesting buildings. In the park there is also a large artificial lake where you can relax in rowing, if you wish.
The airport Madrid Barajas Airport is located 12 miles northeast of downtown, is Spain’s busiest.
