Nerja is a municipality located far south of Spain – the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga in the Andalucia region, some 50 km east of the city of Malaga.The municipality (which includes township and village Nerja Maro) has about 20,000 inhabitants (2010). In summer population increase sharply due to the large tourist influx.
Nerja’s history dates back to about 20,000 years BCKr. The discovery in 1959 of some limestone caves near the town has documented this. It was found inter alia bones, pottery and paintings that archaeologists have managed to date. Some of these caves are open to the public, and thus constitutes one of the major historical sites – not just in Nerja, but on the whole Costa del Sol.
In the center of town Balcon de Europa (Balcony of Europe) – a famous where one can get stunning panoramic sea views.
Along the coast at Nerja there are several nice beaches. The most famous – Burriana – Is quality stamped with the “blue flag”, and there’s also the opportunity for many different kinds of water sports, including diving.And for variety’s sake, you can also take on popular hiking in the nearby mountains of the Sierra Almijara.
