The city of Peterborough is located in East England the River Nene – like 30 miles to the north flows into the North Sea. The city is located in the county of Cambridgeshire – 55 km northeast of Northampton, and 120 km north of London.

Peterborough has 173,000 inhabitants (2010), and is an important center for the region with regard to trade, industry, transport and culture.

The city’s most popular tourist attraction is Peterborough Cathedral from 1238 – which is also one of England’s greatest cathedrals.

Other attractions in the city include the archaeological site “Flag Fen” with reconstruction of Iron Age huts and “Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery” – an exhibition of over 230,000 archaeological and historical artefacts. The museum also has an art gallery with exhibitions of paintings and drawings from the 1600s until today.

At the village of Long Thorpe – approx. 3 km west of Peterborough city center – standing tower “Long Thorpe Tower” from the 1300s. Inside the tower, visitors can see the preserved wall paintings from the Middle Ages.

Just north of downtown (near the town of Stamford) is probably one attraction, the beautiful castle “Burghley House” from 1587. This is one of the finest examples of English 1500’s architecture.

The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport, located 98.6 km northwest of Peterborough. Other airports that may be an alternative London Stansted Airport (107 km), London Luton Airport (110 km) and Norwich International Airport (128 km).
