Sacramento is the capital of the state of California and is situated on the River “Sacramento River” – 130 km northeast of San Francisco.The city has 471,000 inhabitants (2012), while the metropolitan area has a population of 2.5 million.
Sacramento is an important cultural and commercial center for the region and has considerable industry. The city has channel connection to San Francisco Bay – and on to the Pacific.
Sacramento has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
The oldest parts called “Old Sacramento,” and is a major tourist attraction. The area consists of cobbled streets and 53 buildings from the 1860s. Here you can also run a steam train or sail on the river by steamer.
Other tourist attractions include Sacramento Bridge “Tower Bridge” from 1935, the Catholic Church “Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament” from 1889 as well as the Art Museum “Crocker Art Museum” – as the state’s premier collection of artwork from California.In addition, the museum has European, Asian and African art collection.
The city is otherwise a historical museum, a railway museum, a zoo and a car museum.
Sacramento International Airport is located 16 miles northwest of downtown.
