Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, is centrally located in the country by the river Ljubljanica.The city has 280,000 inhabitants (2010), and is located between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea.

Ljubljana is the cultural, economic, political and administrative center. It has a university, founded in 1595.

Ljubljana is located in the Slovenian wine region, and is often called “wine town”.

The city has been destroyed by earthquakes several times, and therefore has a mixed architecture. The old town has an Italian feel with many cafes along the river.

The medieval castle “Ljubljana Castle” from 1495 is the city’s landmark, located on a hill in the center. The place is a major tourist attraction, and from the castle has a wonderful view of the city and region.

Other popular attractions in Ljubljana include St. Nicholas Cathedral from 1706, Triple Bridge “Tromostovje” (three separate picturesque bridges located next to each other), the abbey church of St. Trinitas 1726, National Museum, art museum and Dragon Bridge with Dragon statues from 1901. The Ljubljana dragoonis a symbol of the city.

Ljubljana has otherwise theater, opera, art galleries, a natural history museum, railroad museum, Tobacco Museum, the Technical Museum, Ethnographic Museum, the zoo and several parks and recreation areas.

The city hosts several annual events – including music, theater, and art festivals.

Ljubljana Airport is located 26 miles north of downtown, is Slovenia’s main airport.
