Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, located in Sofia valley west of the country – at the foot of Mount Vitosha.Sofia has about 1.3 million inhabitants (2011), and Bulgaria’s administrative, cultural and economic center. Several rivers run through the city – including Vladajska and Perlovska.

Some of the most visited sights in Sofia’s Boyana Church from the 1200s (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Sofiamoskeen (Banya Bashi) from 1567, Sofia Synagogue from 1909 – which is one of the finest in Europe, and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral from 1912 – one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world that can accommodate over 5000 people.

The international airport Sofia Airport is 10 km east of downtown and is the largest in Bulgaria.
