Stockport is located in North West England – about 10 kilometers south of Manchester, and is part of the metropolitan area of Greater Manchester. Stockport is located on the famous River Mersey and the city has around 140,000 inhabitants (2010).
Stockport history by starting in the 1500s, and industry has characterized it since its founding. In the 1700s, it was established a mechanized silk factory here, and from the 1800s dominated the cotton industry in Stockport. In addition, the city became a center for the English hat-production, and the last hat factory was closed as recently as 1997. Stockport hat history can familiarize himself with the museum “Hat Works”.
The city’s most famous landmark is ‘Stockport Viaduct’, built in 1840 – and which has a total of 27 brick arches. The main railway line into the city center go over Stockport Viaduct. Otherwise, its magnificent town hall from 1908 is an example of fine architecture. The city’s oldest building, “Under Bank Hall” (built in the 1500s), is well worth a visit. So is Vernon Park, slightly off center, which was built in 1858.
