Tunisia is an Arab state and the smallest country in North Africa. It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean coast in the north and east. The country has a population of 10 732 900 inhabitants (2012) and the capital Tunis located in the north-east by the Mediterranean Sea.Arabic is the official language, and around 98% of the population is Muslim.
The landscape is dominated by the Atlas Mountains in the north and steppe and desert in the south. About 40% is part of desert Sahara. Tunisia was a French colony from 1881 to 1956. From 1987 to 2011 had the authoritarian regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s power. Following widespread protests in December 2010 and January 2011 he had to flee. The event has been dubbed the Jasmine Revolution after the national flower of the same name.

A popular tourist destination is the white and blue city of Sidi Bou Said 20 km north of Tunis, with its quaint streets and houses beautifully situated on the Mediterranean Sea. Here artists such as Paul Klee and Henri-Gustave Jossot found both peace and inspiration. The city of Kairouan is the Muslims’ fourth most holy city after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. It has over 50 mosques, and has an important carpet industry.
Tunisia has a number of archaeological digs to show. Dougga is an ancient Roman city in northern Tunisia which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is very well preserved and is a good example of Roman architecture.
