Dubai is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is the largest city in the Arabian Peninsula, and is today a major metropolitan area which also includes some smaller neighbouring towns. The Dubai has about 2.1 million inhabitants (2010), while in the urban area live in excess of 3 million.

Dubai is one of the main tourist destinations in the United Arab Emirates and among the attractions we find a number of major theme parks – gathered in a giant complex Dubailand. This is still under development. Here is The World – an artificial archipelago of 300 islands in the shape of the world map. The project was initiated in 2003. The World is just outside Dubai’s giant marina, and on one of the islands is the world famous luxury hotel Burj al-Arab, shaped like a giant sail. It is 321 meters high, and when it was finished in 1999, was the world’s tallest hotel. Burj al-Arab is also Dubai’s most famous landmark.

In 2010, the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa (828 m) completed, and has already become one of Dubai’s most popular attractions. The building houses including hotels, cinemas, offices, shops and luxury apartments.

The city’s airport – Dubai International Airport – located 4 miles southeast of downtown.
