Windhoek is the capital of Namibia, and is centrally located in the country. The city has about 316,000 inhabitants (2010). Windhoek is about. 1700 meters and is surrounded by mountains.
The capital is Namibia’s political, economic and cultural center – and is also an important transport hub. Cityscape consists of both old and new architecture – including several buildings from the German colonial period and modern high-rise buildings, offices and shops. In the main street “Independence Avenue” and the pedestrian “Post Mall” is the great shopping.
Windhoek has a number of tourist attractions – including the fortress “Old Fort” in 1890, which today houses the country’s national museum. In addition, one should visit the Christ Church (“Christuskirche”) in neo-Gothic style of the late 1800s, the Roman Catholic St. Mary’s Cathedral from 1908, with its two towers and building “Tintenpalast” – which nowadays houses the Namibian Parliament.
Otherwise Windhoek a natural history museum, railroad museum, geological museum, botanical garden, and city park observatory “Zoo Park” – where one can stroll in peaceful surroundings. The park is also a Chinese pavilion, an open-air theater and a playground for children.
The city’s airport – Windhoeck Hosea Kutako International Airport – located 45 miles east of downtown.
