Hämeenlinna (in Swedish: Hämeenlinna) is a city and municipality in the heart of the historical province of Hame in southern Finland.The city has 67 340 inhabitants (2012) located 100 km north of the capital Helsinki. The city is predominantly Finnish-speaking.
Hämeenlinna is the birthplace of Finland’s most famous classical composer, Jean Sibelius (1865 – 1957). One of the major attractions is his childhood home that has been converted into a museum
The medieval Hame Castle is located in the city and is a major attraction. The construction of the castle has been connected to the Swedish Crusaders beginning in the 1200s, but there is no evidence of it as the castle’s age is disputed. The castle was used as a prison from the 1800s to 1953 when a massive restoration was initiated. It has been a museum since 1988. Holy Cross Church just north of Hämeenlinna is a Gothic church from the Middle Ages, of red brick with many paintings and sculptures.
Just outside the town is the natural and recreational park Aulanko from the 1800s that are equipped with watch towers, romantic stone buildings, artificial ponds and rare plant species. The park also has a hotel, and besides the good hiking in the area there are many outdoor activities such as golf, horseback riding and kayaking. In a wellness center can enjoy the spa or sauna.
Hämeenlinna has an industry based on metal, wood and food processing.
