Biarritz is a very popular holiday and seaside resort in southwestern France the Atlantic coast – specifically the Bay of Biscay.The city is located in the Aquitaine region and belongs to the Ministry of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Biarritz has about 25,000 inhabitants (2009), but when tourists flock to the city during the summer, the population increases significantly.
Biarritz is known to be a great resort with pleasant climate, sandy beaches, lively nightlife with night clubs and casinos, beautiful parks and many tourist hotels and cottages. The city is also famous for its excellent surfing opportunities along the coast.
Some popular sights and tourist attractions in Biarritz include the city’s beach “Grand Plage” (which also includes the seafront and a 73-meter high lighthouse), St. Martin’s Church from the 1100s and saltwater aquarium “Musée de la Mer” – where visitors can see both sharks and seals.
The Asian Art Museum “Asiatica – musée d’Art Asiatique” in Biarritz is probably a popular attraction. It appears Asian art exhibitions – especially from India, China and Tibet.
On a cliff near the coast stands the statue “Rocher de la Vierge” from 1864, which is a white sculpture of “Madonna with child”.
Biarritz is located only 18 km from the border with Spain, and it is also a short distance to the cities of Bayonne and Anglet.
