Gjøvik is a city and municipality in Oppland located about 120 miles northwest of Oslo on the west of Norway largest lake, lake.The town of Gjøvik has 19,261 inhabitants (2012).
The city grew largely up around the workplaces that were established after Gjøvik glassworks came in 1807. Agriculture is an important industry in the municipality while the food industry, printing industry and wood products dominate the industry. Close to the lake is central and paddle steamer Skibladner goes both charter and scheduled flights during the summer.
Gjøvik farm is an important cultural institution in the municipality. There are papers on the farm as far back as the 1400s. In 1952, the farm in the municipality’s own, and every year at the end of September held Gurgaon-field which is a major festival including markets, amusement and cultural events.
Area is surrounded by fields and forests where there are good leisure facilities. In the city there are several hotels, camping, skiing, ski hill and tennis facilities. The large lido Mainland in 1930 near downtown is a popular spot during the summer. In connection with the Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 1994, Gjøvik Olympic Cavern built.
Gjøvik is located 105 km from Gardermoen Airport, and there are buses every hour to and from the airport.
