Hammerfest is a city and municipality in Finnmark county. Hammerfest town has 7119 inhabitants (2012) located at Kvaløya by a bridge to the mainland. Hammerfest is the northernmost town and is located at 70 degrees north.
Fishing is the main industry in the city, Hammerfest has a long tradition as a service base for the fishing fleet in the Barents Sea. Oil and gas operations have begun to play an increasingly important role in recent years. On Melkøya just on the outskirts of town is a large processing plant that processes and cools the gas from the Snøhvit field.
Hammerfest is the port of call for Hurtigruten and northbound coastal steamer arrives Hammerfest every day at 05.35, while the southbound arrives at 11.35. Arctic Culture, the city’s new cultural center, located on part of the site of the old Findus plant in Hammerfest. Many come to the city to see the midnight sun can be enjoyed until the end of July but the northernmost city has so much more one should miss.
One of the attractions is the Meridian Column, erected in 1854 in commemoration of the first international survey that was done by the Earth’s size and shape. Meridian is on UNESCO’s list of protected cultural heritage. Reconstruction museum shows the history surrounding forced evacuation and burning of Finnmark and North Troms under 2 World War and postwar reconstruction. St. Michael’s Church is the world’s northernmost Catholic Church. Hammerfest also has an interactive Energy Center.
Hammerfest Airport is on the Birds, ca. 30 minute walk from the center of Hammerfest.
