Girona is located in northeast Spain, and is the capital of the province of the same name.The city is about. 40 km west of the Mediterranean coast, 80 km northeast of Barcelona – in the historic district of Catalonia.
Girona has 97,000 inhabitants (2011), and is a university town and an important commercial and industrial center. The city lies at the confluence of the four rivers Onyar, Ter, Guell and Galligants.
Girona has a typical Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
The old town of Girona is a major tourist attraction, with its narrow, winding streets and nice shops, cafes and restaurants. There is also the Jewish Quarter from the 1400s with narrow alleys.
An important landmark in the city is Girona cathedral “Santa Maria”, which was built between the 1200s and the 1800s. Behind the cathedral is a romantic garden with arcades, which also recommended a visit. Just next to the Cathedral Girona Art Museum.
Other popular tourist attractions in Girona include the Catholic church “Sant Feliu de Gerona” from the 1800s, the monastery “St. Peter Galligants” – originally from 1130’s, which today houses an archaeological museum and “Banys-Arabs” – Arabic baths from the 1200s.
There is good shopping in Girona with specialty shops and stalls in the town center and major shopping centers slightly off center.
The city’s international airport – Girona Costa Brava Airport – located 15 miles southwest of downtown.
