Murcia is located at the mouth of the rivers Río Segura, near the Mediterranean coast, and is the capital of the south-eastern Spanish region with the same name as the town. The population of Murcia is around 420,000 (2010). Taking the suburbs, its population rises to almost 600,000.
Murcia has an important significance as a regional communications and trade – where exports of citrus fruits, almonds and olive oil has meant a lot to the province’s economy.

The city’s main tourist attraction is the magnificent Gothic Murcia Cathedral (built between 1388 and 1465) with its 146 m high tower and its richly ornate Baroque facade. Another point building – located just off Cathedral – Bishop’s Palace from the 1700s. Otherwise, the city, like most Spanish cities, a number of churches to show off – and a few monasteries.

There are a number of shops – and there is also an attraction of a different kind than those mentioned earlier: Casino. It is a combination of casino gaming and social club for the upper class, which was established as early as 1847.
