Biel is located in northwest Switzerland – In the canton of Bern, at the northeast end of Lake Bieler Lake (Lac de Bienne). The city lies on the border between German and French Language. Biel has approx. 50,000 inhabitants (2010), of which 2/3 are German-speaking (the only officially bilingual city in Switzerland). Biel is located at the foot of the “bottom” mountain range in the Jura region, ca. 40 km northwest of the capital Bern, who is also the capital of the canton.

The city is often referred to in both languages simultaneously, and since 1 January 2005, the official name has been Biel / Bienne.

Biel is known particularly for its urindustri (Omega, Certina) – and also has a number of tourist traffic.

The main attraction is the medieval town Biel Altstadt, which is very beautiful. Otherwise Schwab Museum, with its interesting archaeological collections mentioned.

In Biel are also several copies of the typical place, prehistoric “pelehusene” (houses built on piles in wetlands). They represent a building that dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Compared with other similar houses in Switzerland and in the French, German, Italian and Slovenian Alp is the UNESCO World Heritage list as particularly worthy of preservation.

The nearest airport is Bern-Belp Airport, which is located about 55 miles southeast of Biel.
