Cairns is located northeast of Australia the Pacific coast, and belongs to the state of Queensland. Cairns has some 150,000 inhabitants (2010). The port city is located on Trinity Bay by the Coral Sea and has evolved to become one of Australia’s top tourist cities.
Cairns is perhaps best known for being the perfect base for excursions to the breathtaking scenery of the area, eg. Daintree Rainforest, Atherton Tableland and the Great Barrier Reef. The latter is located off the coast (1 hour boat ride from Cairns), and is the world’s largest coral reef. Great Barrier Reef consists of more than 2600 reefs and islands, and has a rich marine life. In 1981, reefs UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here visitors can see beautiful coral and fish in all colors of the rainbow.
Cairns is also known for its beautiful beaches, a little off center and its tropical climate. The city is thus an excellent destination when you want beautiful scenery like. coral reefs, rainforests and waterfalls.
