Iraklion International Airport – “Nikos Kazantzakis” (HER) – is the second busiest airport in Greece, located in the north of the island of Crete – about 5 km east of the town center of Iraklion (Heraklion).
The airport serves 5 million passengers annually (2010), and from here there are direct flights to 71 destinations in Norway and abroad. In summer there is a great charter traffic at the airport. Airlines flies here include Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM, SAS and Norwegian.
Iraklion Airport has one terminal building, and amenities for travelers include banking, ATMs, duty-free shop, souvenir shop, gift shop, bookstore, cafes and information desk. There are no hotels in the immediate area.
There are plans to build a new and larger airport close by, which will be finished in 2015. This will serve between 5 and 10 million passengers a year.
