Tampere is a city of approx. 210,000 inhabitants, located in Western Finland lan – between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. It is one of Finland’s most industrialized cities. Tampere, which was founded in 1779, is also an important school and college.
Tampere is also a popular tourist destination. Among its many attractions are several theaters, concert halls and museums. In particular, the Tampere Art Museum mentioned – which also houses the “Moomin” and “Moomin house” on the model of Tove Jansson’s world famous stories about Moomin trolls.
The city has otherwise a large amusement park with such planetarium and aquarium – and a number of green spaces and parks (about 500 in all). This has made the Tampere often called Scandinavia’s most beautiful industrial city.
Tampere was badly damaged during the Finnish Civil War in 1918, and there is little older architecture is preserved. However, there are a lot of exciting contemporary architecture here – including Kalevala Church and City Library.
The city’s international airport – Tampere-Pirkkala Airport – located 17 miles southwest of downtown.
